Between 1857 and 1862, over 16,000 African men and women were purchased by French recruiters in West African human markets, then emancipated. However, they were forced to sign ten-year labor contracts to be fulfilled in Martinique and Guadeloupe. These workers remained invisible in official history for a long time. Today, their descendants are piecing together the fragmented memories of their ancestors, known as the ‘Kongos’.
