The early 1930s was the peak of the colonial discourse in France and at the same time in the beginning of talking cinema. A perfect opportunity for the multiplication of racist and stereotyped images of people in French cinema.
Yet three directors, Jean Vigo, Jean Renoir and Jean Grémillon, challenged the colonial imagination in place through staging choices often overlooked.
This documentary thus offers a new look at sequences of the greatest films of French cinema.
